Jantar Mantar: Exploring the Astronomical Marvel in New Delhi

Jantar Mantar, situated in New Delhi, is a complex of 13 architectural astronomy instruments. Constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur from 1723 onwards, it aimed to revise the calendar and astronomical tables. Despite a plaque mistakenly dating its construction to 1710, later research suggests the actual year as 1724. The observatory, standing at a height of 723 feet (220 m), was primarily used to compile astronomical tables and predict celestial movements, reflecting Jai Singh's profound interest in astronomy. Although the Delhi Jantar Mantar had significantly decayed by the 1857 uprising, efforts were made by Maharaja Ram Singh in 1901 to restore the instruments, including the famous Jaipur structure.
